We've all heard the quip that "Improvisers are nothing more than lazy writers." But that’s not the whole story. Developing scripted material can be daunting and frustrating, particularly when staring at a blank page or trying to wrangle a handful of people who may have competing life priorities like jobs or kids. There’s writing, rewriting, learning your lines, rehearsing – it’s a lot to ask particularly if like me you’re in a small market and working with people who are primarily doing this for fun. Early on in my improv career, I accidentally developed some tools and techniques out of these frustrations* that helped me cut through all the bullshit and create sharper, funnier content faster by using improv to combine writing, rewriting, and rehearsing. The end result is a process that’s more fun and yields stronger material and performance. In this workshop, I’ll take you through the process I’ve used directing shows and developing my podcast Victrola, and by the end of the six weeks you’ll have at least two fully fleshed out scenes ready to put up in front of people when that’s possible. Most importantly, you’ll have the tools you need to get to work. Prerequisite: Level 1 Improv or equivillant.

SCENEWORK BOOTCAMP

Whether your goal is solid story telling or pure chaos, the root of any good improv show is solid, two person scene work. This two day long intensive focuses on the fundamentals of creating believable, lived in universes, giving players the tools to answer the audience’s burning question: “Why the fuck are we watching this?” Players will work on making active choices with a deep commitment to honesty and listening and will drill simple techniques to create interesting scene starts every single time, with a heavy focus on building powerful and emotionally dynamic relationships between the characters and creating fun, playable games. The intensive will also include plenty of individual feedback and plenty of reps, as well as in depth homework assignments designed to chisel you into hardened improv steel. Prerequisite: Level 2 or higher in established improv school. Limit: 12 students

HARDCORE LISTENING

Next to “Yes, And,” active listening is the improv skill that separates the men and women from the boys and girls. Listening is about way more than hearing and remembering scene details. It’s about being present and open to being emotionally affected by the little moments. It’s about reacting honestly through the lens of our characters to every single thing that happens when the lights come up. Yea, though our cleverness and wits may fail us, solid listening will always make for an engaging scene. This workshop will apply some fancy Meisner acting technique to our improv to give our honest reactions a much needed workout.

GET OUT OF YOUR HEAD

Are you sitting on the sidelines, stressing about your next move? Are you trapped in your head, judging choices? Do your improv scenes ever feel like work? Are you worried about the big picture when you should be playing? We all experience "being in our heads" in some form or another. But don't worry! We can train our brains and bodies to live the moment on stage! This workshop will center on physical, mental and emotional exercises that will make you more active, present and playful in your scenes.

THE ART OF MISBEHAVIOR

(Games and Heightening) All our lives, we’re trained to be apologetic, to defer to other people’s needs, to not step on toes. Those impulses can cause us to hold back when we improvise. To not go far enough. This workshop will focus on developing joyful and supportive anarchy as a performer, so we can cut loose, create joyful moments and attack the game of the scene with gusto. We'll train our brains to recklessly heighten.

THE SCIENCE OF MISBEHAVIOR

(Games and Heightening) Developed over fourteen years and honed in ColdTowne Advanced studies program, this class will zero in on the essential mechanics of game play and heightening in comedy scenes. Students will learn core comedy dynamics in improv scenes and develop techniques for quickly identifying and playing the shit out of games. By the end of this class, participants will be able to more effortlessly "Yes, and" the comedy of the scene and self diagnose their work.
